E-Bike Policy
Electric Bicycle Service Policy
Lake Orion Bike & Adventure Co. supports the responsible use of electric bicycles and is proud to sell, maintain, and repair e-bikes.
For the safety of our customers, employees and community, we do not service electric vehicles that do not meet the State of Michigan’s legal definition of an electric bicycle.
What qualifies as an e-bike?
Under Michigan law, an electric bicycle must have fully operable pedals, an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, and meet one of the following classifications:
Class 1: Motor provides assistance only while the rider is pedaling and stops providing assistance at 20 mph.
Class 2: Motor may propel the bicycle without pedaling but stops providing assistance at 20 mph.
Class 3: Motor provides assistance only while the rider is pedaling and stops providing assistance at 28 mph.
Lake Orion Bike & Adventure Co. reserves the right to decline service on any electric vehicle that exceeds these limits or has been modified in a manner that causes it to no longer meet Michigan’s definition of an electric bicycle.
Why have we adopted this policy?
The electric mobility market has changed dramatically. Increasingly powerful electric vehicles are being marketed and sold as “e-bikes,” despite having performance capabilities outside established e-bike classifications.
This is particularly concerning when these vehicles are operated by children and inexperienced riders. Injuries involving e-bikes and other electric micromobility products have become an increasing safety concern. Higher speeds, heavier vehicles and increased stopping distances can substantially increase the consequences of a collision or loss of control.
There are also concerns associated with modified, damaged or unknown electrical systems. Batteries, chargers, controllers and other components that do not meet appropriate safety standards can present electrical and fire hazards. Because customer bicycles are stored together inside our facility, we must consider the safety of our employees, customers, building and every bicycle entrusted to our care.
This is not an anti-e-bike policy.
We believe e-bikes are an important and exciting part of the future of cycling. They allow more people to ride, travel farther and enjoy cycling in ways that might otherwise not be possible.
Our policy is simply that an electric vehicle that does not legally qualify as an e-bike will not be treated or serviced as an e-bike by our bicycle shop.
This policy applies regardless of brand, where the vehicle was purchased or whether it was purchased from Lake Orion Bike & Adventure Co.
If you’re unsure whether your electric bicycle meets Michigan’s requirements, please contact us with the manufacturer and model information. We’ll be happy to help determine whether we’re able to service it.
